What is EndodonticsWhat are the warning signs of a problem tooth? Sometimes there is pain in the tooth, sensitivity to hot and cold, tenderness when chewing, soreness in the lymph nodes or tenderness in the gums or nearby bone. What should I do? You may contact your General Dentist for evaluation or contact an Endodontist. Who is an Endodontist? An Endodontist is a specialist that only performs root canals and endodontic procedures to save your natural teeth. An Endodontist is trained to handle routine as well as difficult and very complex endodontic procedures, including endodontic surgery and the treatment of traumatic dental injuries. What is a Root Canal? A root canal is a procedure performed to remove the infected or inflamed pulp in a tooth. The inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and sealed to preserve your natural tooth. This is generally accomplished in one visit to your Endodontist. Afterwards, your General Dentist can then place a crown or other restoration on the tooth so that your tooth will perform like any other normal tooth. Will I feel pain? Dr. Nichols and staff will work with you to minimize your pain and discomfort during the procedure. After your root canal, you will be provided with post-operative instructions and medications (as required) to minimize your discomfort. Your amount of discomfort will be based on the amount of abscess or infection in the tooth prior to the root canal.
